In addition to avoiding and reducing CO2 emissions through energy efficiency projects, renewable energies, or modified lifestyles, it is also possible to actively remove CO2 from the atmosphere through so-called sink projects. This also includes the forest protection project in Switzerland described here.
When the forest owners do not exhaust the specified wood harvesting potential of their forests in the long term, this increases the sink potential of the forest. Economic losses are compensated by generating emission reduction certificates, which creates an incentive to introduce methods for climate-friendly forest management.
