The Project

Gegenstand des Projektes ist es, die Verbreitung energieeffizienter Kochherde in Uganda zu fördern und zu unterstützen. Die speziell für das Projekt entwickelten Kochöfen sind simpel, aber haltbar und effektiv. Im Vergleich zu traditionellen offenen Feuerstellen ermöglichen die neuen Metallkochherde eine Brennstoffeinsparung von 35 bis 50 Prozent. Ausgehend von der Metropolregion Kampala wird das Projektgebiet sukzessive erweitert. Bis heute wurden bereits mehr als 700.000 effiziente Kochherde an Haushalte in Uganda abgegeben.

The project focuses on the Ugandan capital Kampala. To date, the project has promoted the distribution of more than 700,000 improved cookstoves. It does so by offering technical and financial support to manufacturers. It assists in distributing the stoves and raising demand and awareness among consumers. The improved charcoal cookstoves achieve fuel savings of 35% to 50% compared to conventional metal stoves. Users also enjoy a much healthier cooking environment since the cleaner burning stoves cause significantly less smoke and fewer carbon monoxide emissions.

No poverty

Dank der energieeffizienten Kochherde können Familien jährlich etwa 300 Kilogramm Holzkohle im Wert von über 100 US-Dollar sparen - laut Weltbank entspricht dies rund einem Siebtel des durchschnittlichen Jahreseinkommens (2014).

Good health and well-being

Laut WHO führt der Rauch offener Feuerstellen in Uganda jährlich zu rund 20.000
Todesfällen. Die neuen Kocher verringern die Emission rauchbedingter Gase, die Atemwegs- und Herz-Kreislauf-Erkrankungen sowie Augenleiden verursachen.

Gender equality

Frauen profitieren besonders von den neuen Kochöfen, da sie weniger Rauchbelastung ausgesetzt werden, weniger Zeit für das Holzsammeln aufwenden und die eingesparte Zeit für Bildung oder andere
produktive Tätigkeiten nutzen können.

Affordable and Clean Energy

Energieeffiziente Kochherde ermöglichen
Brennstoffeinsparungen von 35 % bis 50 % im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Metallkochern. Damit trägt das Projekt zu einer allgemeinen Steigerung der Energieeffizienz in Uganda bei.

Decent work and economic growth

Die Kochherde werden zudem lokal hergestellt und vertrieben, wodurch regionale Wertschöpfung entsteht und Arbeitsplätze gesichert werden. Das Projekt schafft mehr als 230 Arbeitsplätze bei der Herstellung der Kochöfen. Darüber hinaus entstehen mehr als 900 Arbeitsplätze im Bereich Verkauf.

Responsible Consumption and Production

Das Projekt reduziert die nicht nachhaltige Holzernte und Holzkohleproduktion und
trägt so zur Erhaltung der Holzressourcen bei, um Konflikte zwischen den Gemeinden in der Projektregion zu vermeiden.

No poverty

The improved cookstoves cut charcoal use by 300 kilograms per year, saving each family an equivalent of about 110 USD. The saving is substantial considering that the per capita income in Uganda is about 600 USD (World Bank).  

Good health and well-being

In Uganda, indoor pollution contributes to nearly 20,000 annual deaths, according to WHO. The improved cookstoves reduce harmful emissions, lowering the risk of respiratory infections, cardiovascular diseases, and ocular conditions.

Gender equality

Cooking in Uganda is predominantly done by women. Installing cookstoves reduces the demand for woodfuel. This means women spend less time collecting wood. The time saved can be used for other, more productive tasks.

Affordable and Clean Energy

Energy-efficient cookstoves achieve fuel
savings of 35% to 50% compared to conventional metal stoves. Thus, the project
contributes to a general increase in the country’s energy efficiency.

Decent work and economic growth

The project has also generated about 230 positions for local artisans constructing the stoves and more than 900 retail positions selling them, thereby increasing income for the local population.
