This climate project covers an area of around 592 hectares of forest in the Beatenberg-Habkern region of Switzerland and supports the establishment and monitoring of a natural forest reserve. The forest is currently used for a variety of purposes: Due to current forest management and wood consumption, the supply of wood is approximately 244 cubic meters per hectare, which means that the forest cannot completely fulfill its potential as a carbon store.
Thanks to the complete abandonment of the forestry use of wood as part of the project, the forest can develop, absorb more CO₂ from the atmosphere and provide a quiet, undisturbed habitat for many animal and plant species. In the future, the aim is to create a forest with a wood supply of 488 cubic meters per hectare. The project will therefore allow twice as much wood to be added to the same area as before.
