It comprises one of the largest intact peat swamp forests in the country and provides a habitat for many endangered species, including the Bornean Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey and Southern Bornean Gibbon. The project aims to protect and restore the area, which covers around 150,000 hectares. The Katingan project works closely with local communities to develop sustainable sources of income and prevent overexploitation of the area. By creating alternative sources of income, the project contributes to reducing the poverty-related causes of peatland destruction. Clean water and sanitation Intact forests are an important part of the natural water cycle and help to keep existing drinking water reserves clean. As part of the project, public lavatories are also being built to protect the bog waters from human contamination. Decent work and economic growth The project works closely with local village communities to develop sustainable livelihood opportunities. Around 500 women and men are employed as part of the project activities. Es erstreckt sich über eine Fläche von nahezu 100km und verläuft entlang der Grenzen des Tanjung Puting Nationalparks. Das Projekt umfasst eine Fläche von 64.000 Hektar Wald und hat sich speziell auch dem Schutz bedrohter Arten verschrieben – u.a. des vom Aussterben bedrohten Borneo-Urang-Utans, dessen Population im letzten Jahrhundert um 95% zurückgegangen ist. Dazu erwirbt das Projekt Nutzungsrechte für an das Schutzgebiet angrenzende Areale, die als Pufferzonen dienen. Rimba Raya ist das erste REDD-Projekt, das mit dem Dreifach-Gold-Zertifikat nach dem anerkannten CCB Standard ausgezeichnet wurde. The Rimba Raya Reserve is located in Borneo’s southeast stretching almost 100 kilometers from North to South along the borders of Tanjung Puting National Park. The reserve covers around 64,000 hectares and is dedicated to the protection and preservation of many endangered species, most notably, the endangered Bornean Orangutan whose population has declined over 95% in the last century. To protect areas of the forest, land use rights must be attained for the land bordering the protected areas. So far, the project financing supports 13 community-based initiatives ranging from water filtration to supporting a shrimp aquaculture co-operative. Rimba Raya is the first REDD project to have earned Triple Gold Validation under the CCB Standard. It supports many initiatives such as the development of community chicken egg farms, a recycle bank and a tree plantation. Good health and well-being Project revenues support local medical infrastructure, including a vaccination program and a mobile clinic for people in very remote locations. This is important as rural access to healthcare is limited. Gender equality The project sponsors initiatives, in which women make up at least 75% of the co-operative membership. This allows women to gain significance outside of the household and help with jobs, sparking improvements to general attitudes towards women. Reduced Inequalities The project supports rural communities in sourcing their own income. This creates jobs and sets up a base for small businesses and industries to develop. Furthermore, it makes rural areas less reliant on illegal activities such as poaching or logging. Sustainable Cities and Communities The initiative includes recycling projects that reduce waste and promote innovation in recycling methods with other materials. This improves the attitude among communities towards the environment. Climate Action The reductions from preventing deforestation save 3,530,000t CO2 p.a. Consequently, habitats are protected and destructed areas are given the chance to recover and re-grow. As more CO2 is absorbed, it creates a further reduction in the country’s emissions. Life on Land This project protects habitats for many animal and plant species, many of which are threatened by extinction, raising awareness of forest destruction. Etwa 42 % des Projektgebiets bestehen aus alten Wäldern. Das Projekt ist im Besitz der einheimischen Haida- und Tlingit-Völker. Ziel des Projekts ist es, den Wald vor kommerzieller Abholzung und Holzproduktion zu schützen. Im Zentrum des Programms steht die Bewirtschaftung des Waldes mit Fokus auf ein nachhaltiges und natürliches Waldwachstum. Den einheimischen Landbesitzern ist es gestattet, nicht-kommerzielle Beschneidungen vorzunehmen. Darüber hinaus unterstützt das Projekt ein kleines Wasserkraftwerk, das Dieselkraftstoff ersetzen und sauberen Strom liefern soll. Gleichzeitig verbessert es die Luftqualität vor Ort. The Kootznoowoo Project covers 20,159 acres of forest across 4 areas on the Dolomi and Dora Bay regions of Prince of Wales Island. About 42% of the project area is old-growth forest and the project is owned by the native Haida and Tlingit people. The aim of the project is to protect the forest from commercial logging and timber production. Under the program, management of the forest focuses on sustainable and natural forest growth and maintenance harvests for essential activities and forest health. The native landowners are allowed to carry out non-commercial pruning. Additionally, the project supports a small hydro project that will displace diesel and provide clean electricity whilst improving local air quality. The project aims to generate environmentally friendly electricity from the gases that are created through the decay of organic waste. The project has a total installed capacity of 2,852 MW and, over its lifetime, the project will generate around 420,000 MWh of clean electricity from around 2.5 million tons of waste. Based on average per capita electricity consumption, this is enough to sustainably supply power to 170,000 Brazilians for a year. If enough of it collects within a landfill, there is a danger of explosion which is a risk to those who work and live nearby. By collecting and destroying the gas, the project prevents this danger. The project also reduces unpleasant odors. Affordable and clean energy By utilizing the gas from organic waste, the project promotes the production of cheaper and cleaner electricity. Decent Work and Economic Growth The project provides local jobs in maintenance and operation of the control system. The operation creates employment for engineers, technicians, administrators, accountants, procurement officers, and others. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure The project acts as a lighthouse project, providing a good example of a modern, environmentally friendly and efficient waste management system that also contributes to climate protection. Climate action Due to its high amount of methane, landfill gas is a very potent greenhouse gas. By utilizing this gas for energy, the methane is almost entirely destroyed. As a result, the project annually avoids the emissions of around 77,000 tons of CO2e every year. Life on Land Electricity generated is fed into the Brazilian transmission network, reducing reliance on electricity from conventional power plants. This reduces the emission of air pollutants such as nitrogen oxides and sulfur dioxide, which would result from burning fossil fuels.
