Projektportrait
Das Projektgebiet befindet sich in den Distrikten Katingan und Kotawaringin
Timur in Kalimantan, dem indonesischen Teil Borneos. Es umfasst einen der
größten noch intakten Torfsumpfwälder des Landes und bietet Lebensraum für
viele bedrohte Arten, darunter Orang-Utan, Nasenaffe und Gibbon. Projektziele
sind der Schutz und die Renaturierung des Gebietes auf einer Fläche von rund
150.000 ha. Das Projekt arbeitet eng mit lokalen Gemeinden zusammen, um
nachhaltige Einkommensquellen zu entwickeln und die Übernutzung des Gebietes
zu verhindern. Es unterstützt traditionelle Formen der Erwerbstätigkeit
wie etwa nachhaltige Formen der Landwirtschaft und der Waldnutzung.
The Katingan project area is located in the districts of Katingan and Kotawaringin Timur
in Kalimantan, the Indonesian part of Borneo. It comprises one of the largest
intact peat swamp forests in the country and provides a habitat for many
endangered species, including the Bornean Orangutan, Proboscis Monkey and
Southern Bornean Gibbon. The project aims to protect and restore the area,
which covers around 150,000 hectares. The Katingan project works closely with
local communities to develop sustainable sources of income and prevent overexploitation of the area. It supports traditional forms of gainful employment
such as sustainable forms of agriculture and forest use like farming, fishing,
and non-timber forest products harvesting.
