New blog series features First Climate’s project development experts as they explore the design, implementation and management of high-quality carbon projects
Scaling up climate technology and developing new climate projects are key to tackling the climate crisis. Follow First Climate experts in the new “Unearthed” blog series from our project development team as they examine the opportunities and the challenges of nature-based and technology-based climate solutions.

High-quality carbon projects are crucial to effectively addressing the climate crisis. When developing a carbon project, there are many different factors that play an important role in the project's success: such as managing risks, quality control and monitoring, cooperating with local project partners, involving communities, and more. First Climate’s new blog series “Unearthed” places project quality in the spotlight by going beyond theory and uncovering the practical side of climate projects.
The practical perspective gives a fresh look at the Voluntary Carbon Markets to both newcomers and veterans alike. Companies will walk away empowered with knowledge from experts on the ground to recognize a high-quality project, or alternatively identify possible weaknesses in projects.
“The theory, the science, the methodologies, this information is already out there. But there’s still a gap when it comes to how this all looks on the ground with these projects. We want to give people a look into our everyday work and show how we as project developers can ensure quality on the ground and provide companies with the tools they need to identify a high-quality project,” says Marisa Kunze, Co-Head of the Nature-Based Solutions team at First Climate Project Development. “The Unearthed blog series is another step toward making the real-world side of project development more transparent.”
We want to give people a look into our everyday work and show how we as project developers can ensure quality on the ground.
For an outsider to carbon projects, the jargon and sheer amount of information can be overwhelming. Terms like “additionality”, “baseline”, “leakage” or abbreviations like “MRV” are frequently thrown around when discussing a project’s quality. These are complex topics with decades of scientific research behind them, and their implications can vary from project type to project type, and even within project types. But what do these terms really look like in practice?
Find out with the Unearthed Blog series and explore these aspects with a fresh, on-the-ground perspective.
