Gegenstand des vorliegenden Klimaschutzprojekts ist die Umrüstung eines Kohle-Kessels auf erneuerbare Energien in der Svilosa Zellstofffabrik in der Donau-Stadt Swischtow in Nord-Bulgarien. Das Svilosa-Projekt ist das EU-weit erste Klimaschutzprojekt seiner Art, das nach den stengen Vorga-ben des Gold Standards zertifiziert wurde.

The project is situated in the Svilosa territory, near the town of Svishtov on the right bank of the Danube river. The aim of the project is to utilize available waste biomass residues – byproducts of wood processing at the Svilosa pulp processing plant as fuel. The biomass boiler has a capacity of around 14MW, equating to roughly 157,000 MWh per year, replacing roughly 117,000 MWh of coal-fired electricity.

Good health and well-being

Durch die Umrüstung auf Biomasse substituiert das Projekt den Einsatz von Kohle, und verhindert dadurch die Freisetzung zahlreicher Luftschadstoffe, die mit der Kohlefeuerung assoziiert sind. Das wirkt sich positiv auf die Luftqualität vor Ort aus und trägt dazu bei, das Risiko von Atemwegserkrankungen zu reduzieren.

Affordable and clean energy

Biomasse ist eine saubere Energiequelle und ihre energetische Nutzung kann dazu beitragen, die Abhängigkeit Bulgariens von fossilen Energieträgern und importierten Brennstoffen zu verringern.

Decent work and economic growth

Die Technologie der Energieerzeugung aus Biomasse erfordert spezielles Fachwissen. Für den Betrieb und die Wartung der Anlage sind geschulte Arbeitskräfte gefragt. Das Projekt beschäftigt zehn Personen langfristig und in Vollzeit.

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

Durch die erfolgreiche Umsetzung erfüllt dieses Projekt eine wichtige Leuchtturmfunktion. Es beweist, dass erneuerbare Energien Projekte auch im anspruchsvollen Wirtschaftsumfeld konkurrenzfähig sind und dient damit als Vorbild für weitere Projekte dieser Art in Bulgarien.

Climate action

Durch die Verwendung der vorher ungenutzten Biomasse wird die Deponierung und Zersetzung von Holzresten und die damit zusammenhängende Entstehung von Methan verhindert. Methan ist ein besonders potentes Treibhausgas und ist weitaus klimaschädlicher als beispielsweise CO2.

Life on Land

Energie aus Biomasse stellt keine Bedrohung für die Wälder dar, da Biomasse aus Abfallnebenprodukten hergestellt wird.

Good health and well-being

The project reduces reliance on coal for energy. This is important as coal is a particularly polluting energy source, resulting in respiratory illnesses being the 3rd biggest killer of children under the age of 5, according to the WHO.

Affordable and clean energy

The project will displace the use of fossil fuels. Biomass is a clean and cheap source of renewable energy. The project reduces air pollution associated with coal based fuels.

Decent work and economic growth

Biomass energy generation technology requires specialized expertise. Implementation of such technology comes with the need for trained manpower to operate and maintain the system. The project employs ten people on a full-time and permanent basis.

Industry, innovation and infrastructure

The project helps Bulgaria to stimulate and commercialize the use of biomass energy technologies and markets. It also acts as a good model for further biomass investments in the country.

Climate action

The project contributes to the mitigation of climate change as it reduces greenhouse gas emissions. It avoids 83,000t CO2 annually. In addition to this, the use of wood pulp as biomass reduces methane emissions which would have been released if the wood were left to decay.

Life on Land

By generating clean electricity, emissions of nitrogen, soot and sulfur dioxide, among other things, are indirectly avoided.
