The latest in a long list of deadlines on the rocky road to try and agree a post-2012 global climate change regime is 31 January. By that date, industrialised and developing countries backing December's Copenhagen accord (see box, page 14) are supposed to have added teeth to the document's blank appendices by making individual pledges to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. But with that the accord not adopted by the UN - countries party to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) only "took note" of it in Copenhagen - its future and that of the UN climate change process, as well as the role of carbon markets, are under intense scrutiny.
