Q: Although Nigeria is a late comer as a participant in the Carbon Emission Reduction (CER) market, some presentations at IREC 2009 identified the country as having the biggest potential for Carbon Development Mechanism (CDM) projects in Africa. What are the practical evidences of this?
A: Projects that qualify for the CDM are those with a clear proof of greenhouse gas emissions reduction in the atmosphere. Examples of those projects are renewable energies, landfills, composting, reduction of flaring in oil and gas sector, energy efficiency and forestry, to name a few. Nigeria has a huge potential in many of these sectors, with incontestably the highest in Africa in oil and gas, renewable energies and in waste management (landfill, composting).
