Energy Efficiency Project of Farmers Cooperative

Project Type: Energy Efficiency

Location: India

The purpose of project is to upgrade the existing plant technology with energy efficient technology and to reduce the specific steam consumption ratio. Over a period of 10 years, the project will thus generate emission reductions of 2,953,080 t CO2e.

Project Description:

The purpose of project is to upgrade the existing plant technology with energy efficient technologies and to reduce the Specific Steam Consumption Ratio (SSCR) of the at-tached fertilizer plant. The activity consists in various projects which fall into the cate-gory of new technology alternatives, retrofits, new design and waste heat recovery. Since the energy efficiency projects are being implemented in various sections of the plant, the performance of one project is linked to other project. Therefore these pro-jects are implemented in all plants in an integrated manner to achieve maximum energy savings.
The main target is the reduction of steam consumption in the plant, which in turn re-sults in the reduction in fuel fired in the boilers (coal, natural gas, naphtha, Low Sul-phur Heavy Stock (LSHS)) and in the reduction of CO2 emissions.
Due to the Urea Pricing Policy of the Indian Government, the project gets a reimburse-ment based on the cheapest fuel, which leads to minimal monetary returns for the im-plementation of energy efficiency retrofit schemes. For this reason the project activity is the only project of this type in the Indian fertilizer industry and it has large replication potential for further substantial reduction in CO2.
Sustainable development
The project activity is located in a rural setting and contributes to the environmental and social issues locally and globally through:

  • Reduction of the consumption of fossil fuels
  • Reduction of the pace of depletion of natural resources.
  • Increase in local employment in the area of skilled / unskilled job opportu-nities during the construction phase of the project activity and through ameliorating the economic status of the rural community
  • Aiding in capacity building of higher technology for local employees.
