The purpose of the project is to generate electricity in order to feed it into the public grid. Due to its significant contribution to climate protection and to sustainable development in the region, the project fulfills the requirements of the Gold Standard.
The project is the second largest wind farm in Turkey so far. It consists of 17 wind turbines that are connected to the wind farm substation via underground cables. The net electricity production is expected to be 160,800 MWh per year. To this extent, the fossil fuel dominated grid electricity will be displaced by renewable energy.
Despite the generally good wind conditions in Turkey, the use of this energy source faces several obstacles. The lack of long-term financing, the instability and the design of the Turkish electricity market hinder the realisation of wind energy projects. Thus this project only became financially viable through the additional revenues from VER sales.
The project contributes to sustainable development in Turkey in the following ways:
Environmental benefits: Compared to the conventional energy generation from fossil fuels, the project leads to a reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and other air pollutants (sulphur dioxide and particulates). As a renewable energy source, wind energy can be used without curtailing the supply of primary energy sources for future generations.
Economic benefits: The project creates local employment, about 100 positions during the construction phase and 20 new jobs for operation and maintenance. The local population benefits from the project in terms of new sources of income and advanced education. In addition, the generation of energy from a previously unused source leads to additional revenues for the municipalities and therefore improves overall living conditions, especially in rural areas. On a larger scale, the project stimulates the growth of the Turkish wind energy industry and contributes to the diversification of the Turkish energy mix.
Social benefits: The close collaboration of the local population from the early planning stage onwards has resulted in a high level of understanding and awareness for the necessity of climate protection measures through renewable energy projects. The newly created employment opportunities lead to an improvement of social conditions.
