Upgrading hydro electric power in Brazil

Hydroelectric power generation uses a clean and renewable source of energy: the flow of water. This project expands the capacity of an existing hydroelectric plant in Espiritu Santo, Brazil, improving its efficiency and capacity to generate electricity even during times of below average rainfall.

Hydroelectric power plants already produce more than 30% of Brazil’s energy and the country ranks third globally in annual hydroelectric power generation. While hydroelectric power is generated without the emission of greenhouse gases, the efficiency of the installed plants is crucial. In years with below average rainfall, it is important that a hydroelectric plant works as efficiently as possible. The hydro power upgrade undertaken by the project enables an existing power plant to use water flows not previously tapped for power production. The upgrade also includes the installation of additional turbines, which has created new construction and maintenance jobs.
