The JI Project Cycle

First Climate prepares all the necessary documentation and supports you in all steps required to get national and international approvals to register your project under the Kyoto Protocol.

Track 1 or Track 2

Whether a project proceeds under Track 1 or Track 2 will depend on whether the host country satisfies the eligibility requirements for JI. We can help you determine under which Track your project will be eligible to proceed.

Project Design Document

Under Track 2, the Project Design Document (PDD) is the main document required for the registration of your project as a JI activity. First Climate can prepare the Project Design Document according to international best-practice standards.

Host and investor country approval

First Climate will support you in obtaining formal approval for your project from the host country’s relevant authority and from the investor country’s relevant authority. The two Letters of Approval are prerequisites for the final determination report.

Determination

When proceeding under the Track 2 process, First Climate coordinates and oversees the determination of the Project Design Document by an independent third party, a so-called Accredited Independent Entity (AIE). First Climate can support you in selecting the most appropriate AIE (in terms of cost and timely availability).

Final determination

Under Track 2, once the AIE has finalized the determination report, it will send a request for final determination to the JI Supervisory Committee (JISC). Under Track 1, it will be necessary for the project to meet host country requirements for determination. First Climate will support the final determination process and help to resolve all issues with the JI Supervisory Committee, or the relevant national authority, as the case may be, to finally get your project registered.

Monitoring

When the project is operational, the previously estimated emission reductions have to be monitored. To facilitate this process, First Climate can make site visits and provide expert knowledge, as required. The monitoring data must be compiled in an annual monitoring report.

Verification

Under Track 2, the emission reductions achieved by the project must be verified by an Accredited Independent Entity. The AIE verifies the emission reductions on the basis of the monitoring report. Track 1 will require a similar process. First Climate can provide expert support throughout the verification process, as necessary.

Issuance of carbon credits

Once the determination is final, the Emission Reductions Units (ERUs) will be transferred from the host country registry to the project owner’s account. If Track 2 is applied, a registration fee has to be paid.
